The credits required for the award of the first degree are as follows:

  • Entry into Level 100: A maximum of 168 credit s and a minimum of 120 credits.
  • Entry into Level 200: A maximum of 126 credits with a minimum of 90 credits.
  • Entry into Level 300: A maximum of 84 credits with a minimum of 60 credits.

Introduction to Communication Studies

KCOM 101    Introduction to Communication Studies          (3 Credits)

This course introduces students to the practices and principles of communication studies. The course generally focuses on the communication process. It further explains issues of perception, listening, self-disclosure, speech apprehension, ethics, nonverbal communication, conflict, power, and dysfunctional communication. Other topics include: Small group communication; Media, technology and communication, and Multimedia communication.

Business Communication

KCOM 102    Business Communication                 (3 credits)

This course focuses on effective communication management at individual, group and organizational levels. Topics include effective communication in business; the process of business communication; effective communication principles; business letters; business reports; oral presentation and use of modern electronic gadgets; the use of language; body language and other nonverbal communication; managing communication in small groups and teams; and internal communication within an organization.

Introduction to Mass Communication

KCOM 103    Introduction to Mass Communication  (3 credits)

This course gives the student an overview of the broad field of Mass Communication by examining the basic types of communication, the nature, forms, content and audience of the media of mass communication. It also considers national mass media systems and mass communication across borders.

Public Speaking

KCOM 104    Public Speaking    (3 Credits)

This course provides instruction and skills in the preparation and delivery of speeches within a public setting and group discussion. Emphasis is on research, preparation, delivery, and evaluation of informative, persuasive, and special occasion public speaking. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and deliver well-organized speeches and participate in group discussions with appropriate audiovisual support. Students should also demonstrate the speaking, listening, and interpersonal skills necessary to be effective communicators in academic settings, in the workplace, and in the community.

Introduction to Computer & Telecommunication Technology

KCOM 105 Introduction to Computer & Telecommunication Technology     (3 Credits)

This course introduces students to the basic understanding of computers as a tool to aid business operations and management decision making. Students will be exposed to the historical perspective of computers, trends in computer technology, telecommunications, the internet and related developments. Parts of computer, classification and generations of computers and their characteristics will be discussed. Students will also engage in hands-on practice in the use of computers for data processing.

Introduction to Journalism

KCOM 106    Introduction to Journalism              (3 credits)

Journalists must have a strong foundation in writing and appreciation for language, and an interest in what is going on in the world around them. They need persistence in order to dig for facts and, increasingly, a willingness to find creative ways to bring together text, sound and images to tell the important stories of the day. This course will explore journalism’s traditions, and its newer iterations as well.  It will introduce students to the journalism field. Journalism takes many forms, but all require an understanding of journalism’s responsibility to provide truthful, fact-based information in the public interest.

Critical Thinking Skills

KREQ 110     Critical Thinking Skills     (3 Credits)

This course is designed to challenge students to think critically and scientifically about issues learned and how they deal with knowledge in a critical manner to develop their capacity to make sense of information. At the end of the course students should be able to use critical and scientific principles to evaluate and analyze information presented in the form of reasoned arguments and other methods of persuasion. The course covers a range of topics selected from psychology, philosophy, religion, etc. including rationality, reasoning, religious cognition, emotion and decision-making. Religious doctrines and moral thinking will be surveyed. Other scientific models useful for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills for everyday life will also be examined.

Academic Writing Skills I

KREQ 120     Academic Writing Skills I                 (3 Credits)

This course seeks to equip students with the language skills that will enable them to read and write effectively. Students will be taken through fundamental issues in grammar and composition in order to consolidate their language skills in these areas. The course will introduce students to basic grammatical structures such as the parts of speech and punctuations, their combinations, usage and functions in written and verbal situations. Reading and writing skills relevant to university work will be introduced. These will include the structure of the essay, unity, completeness and coherence in essay writing. Emphasis will be placed on class activities and group work, oral presentations and extensive practical assignments.

Numeracy Skills

KREQ 130     Numeracy Skills            (3 Credits)

This course is designed for students in the humanities. It aims at developing students’ ability to apply mathematical thinking in order to solve a range of problems in everyday situation. The course is designed to develop students’ numeracy skills. It is an essential management empowerment tool and it provides Managers a mathematical mind and an analytical attitude to business decision making.

Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Studies

Knutsford Bachelor of Arts programme in Communication and Media Studies is designed to offer experiential learning to students who intend to graduate in the following mentioned areas.

  • The programme aims to provide students with an understanding of a range of relevant contemporary issues related to the theory, development and practice of mass and interactive communication, both nationally and internationally.
  • The programme aims to develop the skills of students to professionally conduct the art of communication in a way that positively impacts society, business and humanity in general.
  • The programme also aims to enable students to develop a strong understanding of the media industry and trends in media, culture and communication - exploring media texts and platforms, institutions and new emerging media.
  •  Ultimately, graduates of the programme will develop academically and professionally sound competencies for careers in Communication, Media and Journalism.

At the completion of a study in Communication and Media Studies at KSHE, students will demonstrate an ability to:
